About this course
Management consulting began in the USA in 1886 when Arthur Dehon Little established his chemical analysis office in Boston. This would lead to the establishment of the firm called Arthur D. Little (still operating today). The new field grew rapidly throughout the 20th century with the establishment of many firms still in operation today such as McKinsey, Kearney, BCG, Bain, and Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting). Nowadays there are 4 main segments: (i) MBB (McKinsey, Bain and BCG); (ii) the Big Four (KPMG, Deloitte, PWC, and EY)); (iii) Other big generalists (e.g., Accenture, Kearney, Oliver Wyman, L.E.K consulting); and (iv) Specialists (e.g., Delta Partners, OC&C, Alvarez and Marsal). Big areas of growth for management consulting firms are digital (e.g., customer experience), advanced analytics (e.g., data science), organization-wide transformations (e.g., recovery from bankruptcy, good to great).
Management consulting is the perfect career for anyone with intellectual and analytical ability craving exposure to different industries before deciding their final career path – though for some, consulting is that path. Careers open to students who learn management consulting include entry level positions in consulting firms (job titles include analyst and associate consultant) and entry level positions within in-house management consulting teams within non-management consultancies.
Your class project is where you’ll apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to a real-world problem. This problem-based learning is a method of hands-on active learning centred on the investigation of messy, real problems that you’re likely to face if you explore the Management Consulting space in your future career one day. In this program, your class project will be clearly linked to all of the outcomes you’ll learn in the class sessions, while still challenging you to think creatively and in a forward-thinking way.
